10 RULES FOR DADS

OF STUDENT-ATHLETES

Paul Woody, the excellent columnist for the Richmond (Virginia) Times-Dispatch wrote a column for Father's Day (June 15, 2003) entitled: Here are 10 rules to live by when an athlete calls you "dad".  The list is one every father of every athlete should not only read, but heed.  With many thanks to Mr. Woody, here is his list:

1.   You attend games to lend support, to be a spectator, not to be a spectacle.

2.   Small bits of advice are allowed, after an adequate cooling off period.

3.   The referee is not out to get your child or your child's team.

4.   Like it or not, you're the cash cow.

5.   Athletic careers are short.

6.   You're not the coach.

7.   College athletics are nothing like high school athletics.

8.   There is crying in baseball and football and, well, you get the picture.

9.   Always keep the health insurance card handy.

10.  Listen to your wife.
